2019 ANTWERP MEETING

A record-breaking 48 students and fellows attended the ISAPP-SFA 2019 meeting in Antwerp, Belgium, to present their research and discuss the latest trends in the field of probiotics and prebiotics. These young scientists represented 19 countries from all over the world, including Canada, USA, Argentina, Peru, UK, Ireland, Turkey, South Africa, Taiwan, Japan and India.

The SFA part of the meeting started off with an introduction given by the SFA 2019 Executive Committee, followed by an informative talk in which Gregor Reid encouraged the students and fellows to take control of their presentations.

Next, Kristina Campbell, Maria Carmen Collado and Mariya Petrova gave a series of inspiring Career Talks full of useful advice for ambitious young scientists looking to build their careers.

During the Discussion Groups, students and fellows voiced their opinions and contemplated the future of Probiotics, Prebiotics and Microbiome research.

Afterwards, during the Poster Session, SFA and ISAPP members had a chance to network and present a total of 46 posters, resulting in exciting ISAPP-SFA interactions. Poster Prizes were awarded to outstanding posters presented by Eline Oerlemans, Geethika Liyanage and Sarah Donnelly.

One of the highlights of the meeting was the Fermentation Workshop given by John Leech, Sander Wuyts and Wannes Van Beeck, emphasizing both the science and the fun behind fermented food.

The first ISAPP-SFA meeting was held in 2010 in Barcelona, Spain, followed by: 2011 in Berkeley, California; 2012 in Cork, Ireland; 2013 in New York, New York; 2014 in Aberdeen, Scotland; 2015 in Washington, D.C.; 2016 in Turku, Finland; 2017 in Chicago, IL; 2018 in Singapore; 2019 in Antwerp, Belgium.
